Research at The San

SAH Ethics Committee

All research at Sydney Adventist Hospital which involves human interaction, access to human tissue and/or identified personal information that is not already on the public record, must routinely undergo ethical review prior to commencement.  This is overseen by the Sydney Adventist Hospital Ethics Committee, which is a registered Human Research Ethics Committee (EC00141).

Research activities that require ethical review include, but are not limited to the following:
•    Interview
•    Survey
•    Focus group
•    Audit
•    Observation
•    Testing or treatment
•    Peer review
•    Clinical trial
•    Clinical intervention

The ethical review process incorporates all aspects of research governance to ensure that human research at Sydney Adventist Hospital meets appropriate standards of quality, safety, privacy, risk management, financial management and ethical acceptability. Retrospective ethical approval will not be granted. Our Procedure: Ethical & Governance Review of Research outlines the procedure for applying ethical review to research.

An accredited medical officer engaged in clinical practice at Sydney Adventist Hospital will only prescribe unapproved therapeutic goods under section 19(5) of the Therapeutic Goods Act to patients under their care, after receiving endorsement as an Authorised Prescriber from the Hospitals Ethics Committee. The Hospital’s pharmacy will only dispense unapproved therapeutic goods to an accredited medical officer engaged in clinical practice at Sydney Adventist Hospital who has received endorsement as an Authorised prescriber from the Hospital’s Ethics Committee and the TGA.
